How not to make our streets safer

Posted on 10:50am Friday 5th September 2008

This morning I’m pondering how we make our public spaces safer. Why? Because I wandered out to the farmer’s market, with my baby daughter, to discover the whole of Walthamstow town square and gardens cordoned off by police lines.

Listed building left to rot? Don't worry, it's the council's.

Posted on 11:27am Thursday 28th August 2008

A beautiful listed building has been damaged and is being left to decay, putting the safety of its users at risk. Don’t worry, you may say, the council can order the owners to maintain it. Tough luck, it’s Waltham Forest Council’s own flagship library in Walthamstow town square.

Class and campaigns – posh toffs versus working class Walthamstow

Posted on 9:24am Tuesday 19th August 2008

I've several times, by members of the public, councillors and council officers been told that the people fighting to save the EMD/Granada, the Stow, the market, the William Morris Gallery and Vestry House Museum and against a massive Primark on the Arcade site are middle class (and therefore somehow ignorable).

The credit crunch – could it be good for Waltham Forest?

Posted on 2:57pm Wednesday 13th August 2008

Sharia law for pavement cyclists?... Or dangerous drivers?

Posted on 10:35am Wednesday 6th August 2008

Mayor Johnson once advocated hardline "Sharia law" for cycle thieves. Now it seems as if Waltham Forest Guardian readers want the same for pavement cyclists.

Community Councils - why so angry?

Posted on 1:10pm Friday 4th July 2008

It's that time of the week again. It's Wednesday afternoon. The paper is ready to go out on Thursday morning, everything's been topped and tailed and stories for next week haven't quite started to come together yet.
