A WALTHAMSTOW film-maker has won an international award for his latest short flick.

Neil McEnery-West, 31, of Winns Terrace, scooped the best director of short film prize at the New York International Independent Film Festival for his work Undertow.

The lead actor in the 30-minute film, Matthew Jure, also scooped a prize for best actor in a short film.

Undertow was also nominated for best international short film but narrowly missed out.

Mr McEnery-West said: "It is absolutely fantastic, I was just pleased that we were nominated in the three most competitive categories."

Undertow , which took four years to make, is a tragic love story shot mainly in a deserted London.

The crew had to film London at quiet times without any people or traffic in shot, which required patience from everyone involved.

Mr McEnery-West said: "I think the judges were impressed by how ambitious the film was, cast and crew members worked hard and gave their time for free.

"London is a great city to shoot in, it has amazing buildings."

The director also praised Mr Jure for his role in the film.

He said: "Matt is incredibly talented and patient and just worked at everything until it was right."

Undertow does not feature a huge amount of dialogue and the film's atmosphere is largely created by music, along with natural sounds such as water, wind, seagulls and footsteps.

It has been described as featuring an "expressionistic structure involving flashbacks and dreams".

Mr McEnery's work will be screened at the Compton Club Cinema in Soho on April 8 and at the Cannes Film Festival later in the year.

The director is now working on a feature-length thriller called Dipping, the plot of which focuses on a group of thieves operating on the London Underground.

McEnery should get a proper job as we will never make a living in his dream world

Is that a constructive comment? That, instead of trying to create something new, original and interesting, we should all be in 'proper' jobs in sole pursuit of money? Personally, I envy the people involved their talent and wish them the best of luck. They make our lives richer and show that we don't have to just be passive consumers of all things American. I think Mr Khalid - far from being a 'wally' - is completely right. Long live artistic endeavour!

Alexander,
What's real work these days? Over a 20-year period, the whole of British Steel earned less for Britain than Andrew Lloyd-Webber on his own, without subsidy. JK Rowling has made more profit in the last ten years than Ford. This bright young man may not turn out to be a big winner like them, but it doesn't mean he's in the wrong business. Would you rather have shares in British Leyland, or Dreamworks?

MDJ’s perspective is absolutely right. The Creative and Cultural Industries in the UK contribute over 60 BILLION UKP to the economy. Don’t write it off as some kind of indulgence. This is a serious business sector. On a local note, what a joy to find someone keeping the spirit of Hitchcock alive

Alex,

I'm alarmed given that your comment suggests that 'we' will never make a living from mcenery-west's dream world. Who is this collective 'we' that you refer to? Does it include me? Also how exactly would you go about making a living from someone elses 'dream world', and perhaps this suggests you're in a bit of a 'dream world' yourself old chap? I'm wondering if your time might be better spent concentrating on your own contributions to society rather than in the pointless critical damnation of others?

McEnery should get a proper job

How do you know he hasn't? I happen to know that he does have a 'proper' job and pursues his film-making in his own time, because it's a passion of his.

Your only passion seems to be having a pop at others and even that you have to do at 10am on a weekday which suggests to me that you're not working that hard at your 'proper'job. Get a life.
