LEYTONSTONE is gearing up for a car free festival as pedestrians reclaim the streets later this month.

Car fumes will be replaced with live bands, comedy acts, cycling displays, a French market and environmental stalls in the town centre on Sunday, September 19, from noon until 7pm.

Only in its second year, the car free day is the biggest event of its kind in London. The aim is to raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of sustainable living and transport by leaving the car in the garage.

Leader of Waltham Forest Council Clyde Loakes said: "Car Free Day is a fun, community event, which I hope will raise awareness of transport issues in the borough.

"Leytonstone Town Centre will be pedestrianised with Church Lane and Kirkdale Road packed with entertainment and attractions.

"Car Free Day is a great way to demonstrate the real difference to the street scene, air quality and character of an area which can be made simply by reducing car use."

Last year's inaugural event attracted thousands of visitors and organisers. The council is hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.

The festival in Leytonstone is just one of many events that will be going ahead all over London during Good Going Travel Awareness week from September 15 to 22.
