PARENTS at a primary school this week came out in force to rid our streets of imitation firearms, and Waltham Forest Mayor Michael Lewis has signed up to our Guns R4 Losers campaign.

At least 200 signatures have so far been collected by children and teachers at Wellington Primary School, Chingford.

Kim Adams, head teacher of the school in Wellington Aveune, said rumours were rife that pellet guns were being sold to children in parts of Chingford.

The Guardian's campaign was launched after we were able to buy a realistic looking toy gun from a stall in Walthamstow Market.

  • The gun and other mock firearms were on sale with other children's toys. Our view is that this is unacceptable and the parents at Wellington Primary School agree.

Ms Adams said: "Parents have been very supportive and they are very concerned about the level of gun crime in the local area.

"We do feel that this is a serious issue that needs the support of the whole community to pull together and say that these type of toy guns are unacceptable."

The Guardian was presented with the petition of 128 signatures last week. Ms Adams said that figure had since risen to around 200 signatures.
