SPURS TALK: Are Tottenham's stars fit enough to compete at the top?

DESPITE Juande Ramos introducing a new hard-line approach to fitness and dieting at Spurs, it seems that some Tottenham squad members may still be well behind the stars at the top Premier League clubs.

Hard-line Spaniard Ramos was said to be shocked by the fitness levels of the players when he took over at White Hart Lane in October 2007.

And while he implemented a new regime that has seen members of the squad like midfielder Tom Huddlestone improve their fitness ten-fold, a story claiming that former striker Dimitar Berbatov is well behind the levels required at new club Manchester United will surprise Spurs' fans.

The alarm-bells will certainly be ringing in the white half of north London, that some of Ramos' men may still lack the same preparations if United do feel that Berbatov hasn't been reaching his peak fitness while with the Londoners.

This revelation follows a story in the News of the World claiming that new United record signing Berbatov, is short in terms of his general conditioning compared to other players at Old Trafford.

The paper quoting a United club insider said: “The coaches have been told to put him on an extensive fitness programme when he returns from international duty with Bulgaria to bring him up to ‘United standards’.

“We believe he has a natural fitness that allows him to get away with things most other players can’t.

“But we think there’s another 25-30 per cent to come once he’s involved fully.

“Even Berbatov will be surprised at the extra levels of fitness he will be able to achieve with the United the training programme.”

This article is totally ridiculous. Manu were refering only to Bebasulk who had not trained in a proper fashion or been involved with the team for a couple of weeks.
The comment bears no reflection on the fitness of the squad.
just watch the teams work rate. Has the writer ever been to a Spurs game?

Agreed! Berbatov elected not to play in the second and third matches, so he's hardly representative of the squad. In fact, there is a belief amongst some of us that Berba was 'instructed' not to play against Sunderland. Who could that have been I wonder? I thought in terms of fitness Spurs equalled Chelsea last Sunday, and were stronger in the last 15 minutes or so.Usual Manure propaganda!

What a daft article!!! I'd be very surprised if Utd players are as fit as Spurs players. Simply look at Rooney and his diet over the summer etc for the truth of that and compare that with Ramos' control of diet on and off duty with Spurs players.

Berbatov is not only a smoker but the complaint throughout pre-season was that he wouldn't train properly as part of his campaign to get his transfer to Utd. Most newspapers reported this, I would be surprised if this one didn't and yet now you concoct a spurious story that conflates this documented lack of fitness in the case of Berbatov with a ridiculous speculation regards the squad as whole.

If you can't be bothered to research properly how about you read what the other proper newspapers have said previously on the issue.

Berbatov had the summer off, hardly played in pre-season, and has made one appearance (as a substitute) in the league so of course he's not fully fit. As P. Hicks quite rightly pointed out Spurs were the physical match of Chelsea last Sunday and, if the writer of the article had actually seen that game he wouldn't have written this drivel. Honestly, people who quite clearly don't understand football shouldn't write about football
